book cover

There is an energy inside us that we always ignore. Today we will learn about that power which is self-esteem.

On hearing the word self-esteem, only one word comes to our mind and that is self-respect but actually the meaning of self-esteem is very deep, self-respect is a very small part of it.

  Q. What is self-esteem?

Answer:- Self-esteem is when we have faith in ourselves and we have full faith in ourselves that we can do this work. Self-esteem gives us a lot of self-confidence. Which is very important for doing any work.

Self Esteem is of two types:-

SELF-EFFICACY :- Self-efficacy means that we have to trust our work and think that we can do this work. We have to believe in our ability. If we have faith in our ability then the result will also be as good as we have thought. So just believe in your self-efficacy

SELF-RESPECT :- Self-respect means a different identity in the society which everyone knows. It can be of many types like your way of talking, your high position, solving your problems, positive attitude, etc. There are many such things which are included in self-respect.

Q. What should we do to increase our self-esteem?
Answer:- We should trust our abilities, results, and ourselves. That is why the author has explained our self-esteem to us through six pillars in this book.

Here are the six pillars of self-esteem:

The practice of living consciously
The practice of self-acceptance
The practice of self-responsibility
The practice of self-assertiveness
The practice of living purposefully
The practice of personal integrity

The practice of living consciously :-

Our brain is very important for our survival, but there is a huge difference between our ability and intelligence. We learn that we learn our ability and intelligence not through our brain but through our actions.

We cannot accomplish a task by thinking about it. Thinking is not enough for it, but we have to do it with our intelligence.

We have to bring awareness within ourselves, such awareness which is reflected in our actions. This is seen in these cases:

  • Living a happy moment

  • Recognizing your mistake and learning something from it

  • Learn to differentiate between your thoughts, feelings, and facts

  • And asking yourself a question: If I do this, what will happen?

The practice of self-acceptance :-

Self-acceptance means that we should always be aware to move forward in our life. Accept yourself and respect yourself and this will make you believe in yourself that you can achieve success.

The author tells in this chapter how we can get a healthy self-esteem.

For a healthy self-esteem, we should accept ourselves and keep some things in mind such as:-

  • We should think that we work for ourselves.

  • We should always keep our thoughts positive and also recognize them.

Along with this, the author also tells us about an exercise.

He told that he used to tell this exercise to his clients so that he could introduce the clients to the idea of self-acceptance.

Stand in front of a mirror, and look at your face and pay attention to your feelings

And after some time tell yourself that whatever I am, whatever shortcomings I have, I accept myself without any conditions.

Accepting yourself without any conditions is the first step towards change.

The practice of self-responsibility :-

We should take responsibility of our life because only we can make our life better than before, no one else can do it.

Take responsibility after thinking carefully, if you cannot fulfill that responsibility then refuse them, do not try to win their trust by telling lies.

We must take responsibility of those things which depend on us and if it gets spoiled then no one else will come to fix it, we will have to do it ourselves.

We should not blame others for our bad life and neither should we have any expectation from them that they will fix everything.
So take responsibility of yourself and to take responsibility complete this incomplete sentence of the author:

If I take full responsibility of my happiness, then.......

It will depend on your answer and how you complete the sentence.

The practice of self-assertiveness :-

Self-assertiveness means that you remain the way you are, do not try to change yourself and trust yourself that whatever you are doing is right and beneficial for you.

  • Always stand up for yourself

  • Do not back down from responsibility

  • Be the way you are, do not change yourself

  • If you do not understand something, ask questions

The author believes that if you cannot take even these simple steps, then you can become a meaningless obstacle in someone else's life

The practice of living purposefully :-

We all have dreams. Not childish dreams, dreams that will help us move forward in our lives.

Ask yourself: What do you want to achieve?

Ask yourself, set your goals, make a plan for it, and then execute that plan. According to the author, it is important to have a good goal. Set goals that will help you move forward in your life.

Follow these steps to increase your awareness:

  • Take responsibility for setting your goals

  • Take the necessary steps to reach your goals

  • Observe your behaviors and adapt them to your goals

  • Pay attention to the results of your work

The practice of personal integrity :-

Personal integrity means being true to your values.

The more we follow our own principles and follow them, the more our self-esteem will increase.

We must live our life with confidence and ideals.

Use your knowledge to move forward in life, take responsibility for your results, and deal with your challenges.

You can gain a lot of SELF-ESTEEM by using the 6 pillars of meaning exercises in the book.
